As far as I remember the story of KiBu started in Péter György's car when driving with mathematician Dani Varga, who told him that we had made mobile applications and hardware hacking in a few hours time. I think that this realization that technology-literacy is so easy for students today led to the fact that Peter started to work on Telecom to establish an institute which provides an opportunity for the realization of this creative energy.
Peter Halacsy12:21:55
Yes, Peter was very enthusiastic about the idea. And Dániel, too. He programmed a cell robot for mobile phones. Non of us has done mobile programming before. We had many ideas what else to do. There were many other precedents: idealab at BME, we tried to get t-online scholarships, as well as, MOKK incubator projects but somehow each proved to be ahead of time. But it is a long story.
Adam Somlai Fischer12:22:36
For me the most important motivation was to provide an opportunity for our local environment to be able not only to consume but to write technology in the long run.
Adam Somlai Fischer12:23:51
I mean that although it is an established fact what role new media, communication technology plays in our life, there's not too many ways to shape them in our relationships, that is, in our culture although it is our interest in a common cause.
Adam Somlai Fischer12:25:24
As it is impossible to attain one's independence without the knowledge of writing today, it is the same with technology: as long as we remain users and importers of these pervasive systems, we will be more and more defenseless, in a cultural sense.
Ahogy ma mar nem tudna senki sajat szabadsagat kivivni irastudas nelkul, ugy erzodik ez a nyomas a technologia felol, amig csak felhasznaloi es importorei vagyunk ezeknek a mindent atitato rendszereknek, egyre kiszolgaltatottabbak leszunk, es ezt most kulturalis ertelemben mondom.
Peter Halacsy12:25:40
I would add that it is also important to have innovative importers. Early adopters do further society, too. Creativity is just one but the most significant part of media labs. There is no university in Hungary which allows students to deal with the new media not in a theoretic way.
Early adopterek is viszik elore a tarsadalmat.
Peter Halacsy12:25:55
I'm sorry to say that there is no interactive school. So one aim is innovation, the other is the spreading of digital literacy as you mentioned. That it is worth programming even if you aren't an IT specialist.
Peter Halacsy12:25:55
Nincs interaktiv iskola (hu ezen most biztos sokan megsertodnek, elnezest).
Adam Somlai Fischer12:26:07
A media laboratory provides an opportunity for the extension of such a knowledge and its usage…
Egy ilyen tudas elmelyitesere, illetve a tudas felhasznalasanak lehetosegeire kinal taptalajt egy medialabor,
Adam Somlai Fischer12:27:21
Where many researchers, creators with different backgrounds but with the same motivation – I mean culturally motivated to be able to write their own technology – create new interpretations, technologies, and uses. And close to the market, so that these are not only experiments or works of art presented for a narrow circle…
Adam Somlai Fischer12:27:32
but services, products used by millions of people.
de szolgaltatasok, termekek, melyeket milliok hasznalnak.
Bircsák Eszter12:29:08
Yes, I agree but it is not only about extending it but also about knowledge, and the multitude of possibilities. I mean that the knowledge and possibilities of technology become more concrete.
Peter Halacsy12:29:55
Yes, KiBu is a funny playing ground, where you can play with new media. And learn from it.
Igen. Valami ilyesmit akartam en is mondani: a kibu egy jopofa jatszoter is, ahol szivessen foglalkozik mindenki uj media dolgokkal. Es jatek kozben, eszrevetlenul tanulunk.
Bircsák Eszter12:31:54
And the ways which we thought to have no connection do in fact converge, be it a product of the market or of culture.
Peter Halacsy12:32:55
Bocs, egyszerre gepeltunk.
Bircsák Eszter12:33:59
And new things get realized.
Adam Somlai Fischer12:34:04
Another important aspect is that cooperation or the love of interdisciplinarity is not taught in Hungarian schools although they are used all over the world. A media lab requires cooperation and sharing, by its nature.
Melyek a vilagon mindehol mar intenziven hasznalt munkakulturak.
Peter Halacsy12:32:10
It's unbelievable but might still be true that individual performance and competition are appreciated at school. Project oriented teaching methods is a new trend.
The other thing is interdisciplinarity: it is often considered to be a mask under which swindlers hide. MOKK was regarded as too "soft" to be accepted by the informatics faculty.
Bircsák Eszter12:36:11
We knew that there was a need for an institute where we could work in a community and this was a great success.
Peter Halacsy12:32:10
At BME, free subjects are called subjects of general knowledge. Such subjects have a very small share in university education although they provide the only opportunity for an engineer to learn about issues outside his special field.
Bircsák Eszter12:38:37
It was lucky that though many of us have the same background and have already worked in all sorts of communities, each of us has knew what this meant. That's why we managed to build this structure even if it is not perfect yet.
Bircsák Eszter12:42:37
And apart from us, many people were concerned about the idea: researchers, lecturers, and people from abroad. In the
Peter Halacsy12:34:10
Jaj, igen. Hihetetlen, de meg talan most is igaz, hogy 16 even keresztul a versenyhelyzetben produkalt egyeni teljesitmenyt pontozza az oktatas. Mostanaban kezdodnek a projektalapu tanitasi modszerek terjedni.
Amikor a campus campuskent kezd mukodni.
Peter Halacsy12:34:32
Peter Halacsy12:34:40
Peter Halacsy12:37:10
A BME-n, a szabadonvalaszthato, ket kredites targyakat kozismeretinek hivjak.
Bircsák Eszter12:42:37
course of the first three months we experienced how much energy this cooperation generated, what a big piece of work could be done this way.
Peter Halacsy12:32:10
Students love such classes but BME doesn't have the courage to increase their number because traditional subjects (technology, mathematics) are considered more important.
Peter Halacsy12:32:10
Studying technical management is very trendy. You don't have to be good at anything but you will be the boss of the smart IT experts, earn more money and have a better life.
Peter Halacsy12:32:10
We will be successful when the papers report that an under-secretary of state was the member of KiBu.
Adam Somlai Fischer12:37:41
Community is a very important result of media laboratories: the researchers and artists who get to know these working methods in the course of a few months or a year and will be experts in a wide range of industrial branches. This happened in Dublin, where media lab Europe has produced a community of researchers in 5-6 years.
Not to mention the fact that if we make successful products in KiBu, a new kind of entrepreneur may appear who gets rich because of his creativity and expertise.
Adam Somlai Fischer12:39:51
Such people play an important role in society and it is a common cause, a cultural issue.
Adam Somlai Fischer12:41:51
We started to work up these visions at the beginning of 2007, trying to find an operational model, an identity, a name, a place, and the researchers whom we permanently consulted. This way, we have established an institute which provides space for the talented young people.
Bircsák Eszter12:45:22
It is also important that we have defined certain notions like media lab, innovation, new media, technology, community, digital technology…
Peter Halacsy12:32:10
Yes, we have worked a lot…
Bircsák Eszter12:48:58
Some of us knew similar institutes abroad: media labs or incubator houses of various kinds, which either had connection with a university (MIT) or a multinational company. Of course, we can say that the institute or person who founded them realized the effect and significance of creative energy.
Peter Halacsy12:32:10
And there was this article which Szabolcs found, a survey on media labs. It made me realize that if you do it with great concentration, you can have success.
Bircsák Eszter12:51:07
And it made us realize the significance of working in a community, as well.
Adam Somlai Fischer12:45:51
Ezeket a viziokat 2007 elejen kezdtuk kozosen formaba onteni, keresgetve a mukodesi modellt, identitast, nevet, varosi helyet, es a kutatokat akikkel folyamatosan egyeztettunk celcsoportos beszelgeteseken.
Robin Nagy12:48:41
A few words about the other side of it…
Robin Nagy12:52:19
The Hungarian Telecom realized the need of making its existing infrastructure attractive through exciting new contents. Though new contents may be generated by the company itself, it is much better if they are generated by the people who will use them. That is how the idea of such an institution came up.
A telecommunication company with a decreasing income must discover new areas for its further growth. Apart from national and international acquisitions, positions in new industrial branches, it is also important to find new ways of uses for the existing means.
Here comes the idea of an unconventional workshop for research and development. You must be open to the new generation, which reinterprets the notion of innovation.
Kitchen Budapest is the result of the concurrence, in due time, of the new generation of developers and the telecommunication company trying to find its future possibilities.
It is but natural that a company with owners and presence on the stock market wants to make profit. The operational model is designed so that both the researchers and the mother company will profit from the successful projects.
Adam Somlai Fischer12:52:47

Adam Somlai Fischer12:52:47

I really enjoyed naming and defining the researchers at that meeting in 2007 February. Many of us were present: Szabi, Attila, György Péter, Vályi Gábor, Halácsy Péter, and me. We called us Innolab at that time but I think we soon decided to use the word Budapest in the name because of the international relationships.

Nemes Attila13:05:01
I think I may say that our small community is trying to define a new notion of culture. Instead of the "modernist" myth of knowledge which is defined in time and space and linked with the notion of the author, it considers KiBu a horizontally organized workshop, where knowledge is understood as cooperation. Here "genius loci" means the continuous sharing of knowledge, "good idea" means a plan which can be realized cooperatively with the criticism of the community, and "genius" means a partner who is able to impart his knowledge and learn from the others.
Nemes Attila13:07:31
During our project Reorient it was expressed in our conversations with Szabi that the success of the open content generated collaboratively can be attributed to the working method.
When Szabi first told me about the plan of KiBu, he said that the organizational model used in Reorient and in other earlier works should be realized. The cultural model of such a country is opposed to a formation already wide-spread in international practice, where the assertion of knowledge is killed by continuous self-reference, where culture is not part of the economy rather represents a counter-pole, where collaboration is more like a force than a need.
Nemes Attila13:07:31
Unfortunately, both matrix structure and project structure are rare in Hungary even in the creative industry. I don't know why. It's interesting to see that when we let the others make a decision in KiBu, everybody feels strange the first time.
Nemes Attila13:05:01
Azt hiszem a Szabival közös munka-történetünk és a fentiek tükrében, illetve a fent említett csapatot ismerve mondhatok olyat, hogy a kis közösségünk új kultúra fogalomban gondolkodik. A KIBU-t a helyhez és időhöz kötött, szerzői, „modernista” tudásmítosz temploma helyett egy vízszintesen szerveződő, a tudást csak az együttműködésben értelmező műhelyként látja, ahol a "hely szelleme" az együttműködők tudásának folyamatos megosztását, a "jó ötlet" a kooperációban megvalósítható, a közösség kritikájára épülő tervet, a „zseni” a tudását átadni, és másoktól tanulni képes partnert jelenti.
Halácsy Péter13:06:03
Attila, te most 3 kotet tudasszociologiai, tudasmenedzsment konyvet fogalmaztál meg egy mondatban.
Nemes Attila13:07:31
Nemes Attila13:07:31
Sajnos, a matrixszervezet, a projektstruktura meg a kreativ iparban is ritka Magyarorszagon. Nem ertem, miert. Erdekes latni, amikor a KIBU-ban hagyunk donteseket masoknak meghozni, es eloszor mindenki olyan furcsan erzi magat.
Nemes Attila13:09:21
That's why KiBu is more than a media lab or the Budapest element of the global innolab network, or the smart supplier of a telecommunication concern. KiBu can serve as a model for the Hungarian community workshops, projects that are based on cultural initiatives coming from below, as well as, for institutes that define future cultural production.
Nemes Attila
• A society where the strengthening, survival, and often the coming into existence of small community culture was consciously obstructed and destroyed (the Monarchy, Horthy, Rákosi, Kádár), could hardly develop community thinking. Those who established successful creative communities in Hungary sooner or later ended up in jail, or emigration, or on the gallows.
